About Permanent Placement Nursing Jobs

Permanent placement services are offered by a number of recruitment firms most of which offer their services free of charge to the candidate but charge a placement fee to the employer. Using a firm can be attractive to a nurse because of the services offered which take some of the burden off of the candidate. Additionally, nurses can sometimes find positions through placement agencies which are not advertised or available elsewhere. Placement agencies generally operate under on of two models, contingency or retained search. In a retained model, the recruitment process is outsourced to one firm only. The retained search firm will feel free to openly advertise the position because they have a contract in place with the facility to handle the search. The retained firm is usually paid some, if not all, of their fee up front. In the contingency model, many recruitment firms may contract with and submit candidates to an employer for consideration. Nothing is paid up front and the search firm is only paid when their candidate is hired and begins working. Contingency recruiters will often use "blind" job postings that do not disclose the employer to advertise positions.

Whether a contingency or retained search, the basic process is very much the same. First, the agency contracts with the facility to do the recruiting and gains an understadning of the job description and requirements. Then, the agency markets the position to candidates by placing advertisements, networking, making recruitment calls, or scouring resume databases. When a candidate is found that meets the requirements of the position a profile is created by the agency and submitted to the employer. If the profile is compelling enough an interview is arranged. If the candidate is not local, a telephone interview takes place first and then an onsite visit. If all goes well, the agency will often facilitate negotiations to reach a compensation package agreeable to both parties. At that point, a written employment offer is drafted for signature by the candidate.

During the recruitment process a good agency will have a lot to offer the candidate. Some recruitment firms supply a concierge service for the candidates to help with booking flights, renting cars, and setting up hotels and interview times. As the process draws to a close, the firm will negotiate on behalf of the candidate on deal points such as salary, relocation assistance, temporary housing, bonuses, and other benefits details.
