Subacute Nursing Jobs
Nurses employed in sub-acute facilities are frequently working in a hospital within a hospital. These facilities offer a cost effective alternative to a lengthy hospital stay when the patients are too ill to be moved to a nursing home and more highly skilled nursing care is necessary. These "hospitals" frequently utilize the laboratory facilities of the host hospital, but have their own physical therapy units and pharmacy. Sub-acute facilities admit patients who are still seriously ill, such as those on ventilators, and other patients whose rehabilitation is not at a safe point for outpatient care. Sub-acute nurses must maintain an ACLS certification and many nurses are former critical care or intensive care unit nurses. These facilities have no operating or emergency room services. The advantages for a patient staying in such a facility are that emergency care is close by if needed, and lower in-patient costs. These facilities are staffed 24/7.
