Pain Management Jobs

Registered nurses working in a pain management center may be employed by hospitals or private clinics. These nurses will be monitoring the "fifth vital sign" - pain. Pain management nurses can expect to work closely with anesthetists, CRNAs (certified registered nurse anesthetists) or be CRNAs themselves. Monitoring post op pain and chronic pain management are the most common issues for a pain management nurse. Strong patient advocacy skills are required as pain can only be reported by the patient, not seen. A patient's body language and rise in blood pressure and heart rate may be the only clinical presentations a patient has for reports of pain. A pain management nurse typically has two to three years of clinical experience, preferably on a med-surg or orthopedic unit. This position is typically a day shift, Monday through Friday job. Nurses can expect to see patients of all ages, with a heavy focus on the elderly.
