Operating Room Nursing Jobs

Operating Room nurses see a variety of medical interventions from the emergency surgical patient, to the routine surgical patient. Nurses working in the OR are certified in BLS (Basic Life Support, at the Provider Level), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) and depending on the hospital and patient-base, PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support). OR nurses may work in a variety of capacities such as the Circulating Nurse who acts as the liaison between the surgical staff and the family. The nurse keeps the family apprised of the patient's progress. The Scrub Nurse works next to the doctor and hands them the instruments, and the CRNA, the Nurse Anesthetist administers the on-going anesthesia and continuously reports the patient's physiological reaction to the surgery. The ability to stand for long periods of time is crucial for these nurses. OR nurses may be required to take "call", on nights and weekends, whereby they can be called in from home to assist in emergency surgeries.
