Nursery Nurse Jobs

Nurses in this area are certified in BLS (Basic Life Support, at the Provider Level), PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) and sometimes ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support). Nurses working in the nursery care for the newborn babies and are responsible for charting the baby's progress and administering tests and drugs specific to newborns. Nurses may also perform teaching sessions with mothers such as breastfeeding and bathing instruction. Many nurses in this field are members of La Leche League, the international breastfeeding organization. While nurses encourage breastfeeding in new mothers, nurses must also respect a mother's decision not to breastfeed. Nursery nurses will chart the interaction a mother has with her infant including eye contact, verbal communication, and touch. If a mother was traumatized during delivery of the infant, nursery nurses will be responsible for nurturing the baby until the mother is able to assume care. Nurses will also encourage active father involvement with the baby.
