Neurology Nursing Jobs
Nurses working on a neurology unit can expect to work with traumatic brain injury patients, including those who receive blows to the head or stroke victims and neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis. Nurses must have ACLS certification and two to three years of clinical experience. It is also possible to obtain a Master's degree and become a Clinical Nurse Specialist and participate in research studies or to become a Neurology Nurse Practitioner. Neurology nurses can expect to assist doctors at the bedside with procedures such as implanting a cranial monitor to measure the severity and spread of a brain bleed. Excellent neurological assessment skills, physical as well as cognitive, are required. Nurses in this specialty are expected to perform a great deal of patient and family teaching and devise a plan of rehabilitation from brain injuries. Plans of care may extend months into the future, and patient progress may be slow. The nurses in this specialty can expect to have long-term relationships with many of their patients.
