Couplet care nursing is closely related to nurses working on a Labor and Delivery unit. Couplet care focuses on one nurse caring for both the mother and baby in the same room; whereas a labor and delivery unit splits the rooms. Couplet care is an emerging trend in mother/baby care. The mother is with the baby 24/7 from the time of birth, which many contend makes for a stronger bonding experience. Nurses providing couplet care must be skilled in all aspects of labor and delivery, post-partum and newborn care. The nurse must also be comfortable with the father or family taking an active role in the patients' care. It is important for the nurse to assess the mother's level of energy and ensure the mother has adequate time to rest from baby care. This nursing specialty typically accepts labor and delivery nurses with one to two years of experience. This is a 24/7 position situated in a hospital or birth center.
