Med-Surg Nurse Jobs

Medical Surgical (or Med-Surg) nurses are certified in BLS (Basic Life Support, at the Provider Level). This unit is a great place to begin a nursing career as nurses care for patients with a wide variety of issues such as influenza, post-surgeries and broken bones. The Med Surg floor is generally the catch-all floor for patients with a variety of medical issues that are not life-threatening. Med Surg nurses become experts at the various types of wound dressings and wound vacs and may become certified as wound care nurses, which is a much sought after specialty in nursing. Post-surgery patients often have drains and tubes which the nurse must constant assess for adequate, but not copious amounts of drainage. A MedSurg nurse's skill set includes a broad knowledge of all bodily systems and diseases processes. The ability to react quickly to a patient with post-surgical complications is an important quality for nurses on this unit.
