Community Nurse Jobs
Nurses who work in the community may staff such entities as public health departments and community clinics. Nurses in this field track statistics and outbreaks of infectious disease, such as influenza and meningitis. They hold public immunization clinics, may perform on-site assessments of newborns for the at-risk populations and are generally responsible for the well-being of the local populations. Community nurses may oversee local food banks, monitor 24-hour suicide and nurse on-call hotlines. The ability to triage phone calls is an important skill for this type of nursing. Nurses work with the general population of the community, which ranges from the financially affluent to the impoverished. Nurses must be open-minded of alternative lifestyles and able to counsel their patients regardless of their own beliefs and practices. A high-level of job satisfaction is possible in this vein of nursing as the nurse sees the immediate result of his or her interventions.
