Burn Unit Nursing Jobs
Burn center nurses can expect to have very rewarding, and at times, extremely heartbreaking careers. These nurses must have strong stomachs as they may see everything from simple second degree burns with blistering to fourth degree burns where the bones are exposed. This is not typically a good place for a new graduate nurse to begin unless they have previously worked in some type of emergency care position. Burn center nurses will care for a varied patient population from infants to the elderly. Most patients are on protective care precautions and cannot come into contact with any germs from sick visitors. Nurses must wear protective gowns, gloves and masks while giving care to the burn victim. During dressing changes, nurses are expected to withstand hot lights and hot rooms designed to keep the patient warm. The strong odor of burned flesh combined with the heat can foster a challenging work environment. It is possible to become certified in burn care and this specialty enjoys a high rate of pay.
