Assistant Director of Nursing Jobs

The Assistant Director Nursing or ADON, is an experienced Registered Nurse who reports directly to the Director of Nursing (DON). The most common education requirement for this position is a Bachelor's in Nursing. ADONs are typically employed in extended care facilities rather than the hospital, but some hospitals still have this management tier. This is usually a day shift, Monday through Friday, supervisory role. Some off shifts may be involved when the facility is understaffed or is undergoing a State or JCAHO survey. This position entails completing paperwork and supervision of staff. When facilities are short-staffed, the ADON may be called upon to perform direct patient care, and it is a wise practice for the ADON to answer patient call lights and perform light patient care duties to retain their bedside skills. ADONs are expected to conduct themselves with utmost professionalism as they are in a leadership position and will be party to management meetings. ADONs must have the ability to deal effectively with staff problems and disputes as they arise.
